A dark Sunday afternoon saw a possible record Exiles turnout of 13 players eager for a game - and probably the first time a Canadian cricketer has graced our ranks. Kit stood by with an injury before the season had even started and Vinny opted for the pub instead. 1.55pm and all Exiles were limbered up and waiting for the umpires to find the bails. Dean Parkin set the tone for what we hoped would be the day with a maiden first up. Together with Ed, he kept the bowling tight and the ball was flying past the edge of the bat until the first and only wicket fell - gloved through to the slips.
The bowling change gave the batsmen the chance they needed. Despite a rash of swinging at the ball and missing, Green started to connect with the ball and set the score racing along. Ian was brought on in the hope that a change of pace would sort them out. Due respect was paid to a few of his balls, but soon Green was starting his run down the wicket at the same time as Ian - dispatching him around the ground. With the score edging near 200, Dean was brought back for his last few overs. It was left to Grant and Matt to prevent a breakaway, which they did. Grant was motivated by the sledging and ball kicking of a few spectators, but was unable to stop both batsmen getting centuries off consecutive balls in the last over.

Exiles bowling figures:
The sun shone briefly after tea, setting expectations of a pleasant end to the day. Kevin and Vijay were first out. Vijay had saved his energy during fielding for a series of mighty swings that promptly broke his bat. The borrowed bat didn't do much, and a full ball from Kriess down leg was nicked to the keeper.
Cameron had obviously decided while keeping wicket that this pitch held no terrors, and launched himself into the attack with a series of boundaries. Kevin equalled Vijay's 8 and was out LBW. Dean set out to match Cameron in strike rate, but it was the weather that was the decider as rain stopped play. 72/2 off 11 overs, and the Exiles were hoping the cricket would resume with enough light for us to crash past 235, as the rain eased off. Unfortunately the home team were not prepared to tear up their pitch so early in the season, and the teams were forced to retire to the bar.
Result: a draw
