Match report by Stephen O'Connor (capt)
Exiles got off to a mixed start in the season opener. We lost, but there were some encouraging performances ... and we managed to improve significantly against the team (Pretenders) which bowled us out for 24 last season.
Exiles only had 9 players, so were at a disadvantage from the start ... but at least Nick wasn't captain this year!!
SOC won the toss and elected to bat .... Exiles started solidly with SOC and Kyt opening. SOC managed to display a bit of patience, seeing off the opening bowlers before being unable to resist the temptation of a big heave against the extremely slow lobs from their spinner .... Deano seemed to be in a hurry, hitting 10 off his first four balls before he too went for a big shot .... but unfortunately missed and was bowled.. Dax and Munsta put on a few runs .. before being bowled .. then Ed Mcgregor and Guy took the score into the 90s with a useful partenship, Ed surviving being caught out on the boundary when the fielder managed to step over the ropes with the ball in his hands. Brian then came in and managed to survive a whole over ... those net sessions really seem to be paying off (Kev - your star pupil is blossoming). Nick came in hit a drive for 3 runs .. before Ed went for another big hit, but was caught out. Exiles final total was 102 - 8 (all out)
(unfortunately Pretenders didn't match the spirit of the 2005 match when they were in a similar situation of being 2 men short when we let them bat on with an extra wicket - perhaps their memory of how this swung the result made them keen to push their advantage? - Guy)
Deano opened the bowling with a bit of pace and got a wicket on the last ball of each of his first two overs, the second wicket being a superb take by Kyt behind the stumps, Nick had a couple of tough chances put down by SoC and Kyt .. but the pressure was on Pretenders. SOC came on first change and started a little Harmison like with 3 wides, but he was soon on target with his slower ball, fooling the batsmen to play all round it. Munsta kept the other end tight with SoC hovering at silly point.
Guy came on to bowl, and with some inspired field placing SOC moved himself into offside where he took a smart catch. Pretenders managed to continue to move the score along, before Ed Mcgregor took the 5th wicket, caught by the borrowed Pretenders fielder. A couple more chances were put down, before Deano came back to have a bowl at the mouthy git who had seemed hell bent on annoying everyone (including his own team) during the Exiles innings..... but his partner was able to knock off the final runs to go passed the Exiles total for the loss of 5 wickets.
Overall .. a good game ... Exiles bowled well .... fielding was ok .. (could have been a bit sharper) ... but we really missed the 2 extra batsmen which could have meant an extra 20 or 30 runs.
Next game is at Old Tiffinians on Sunday 13th May against Nuxley.
